What began as a campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has now expanded into a wider political confrontation, with Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke warning of a subsequent demand involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Dipke made the statement during a protest organised by the CJP at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2. The demonstration focused on the Election Commission, electoral-roll revisions and allegations surrounding the Special Intensive Revision process. Dipke argued that Kumar should step down and warned of further action if the demand was not accepted.
The statement is significant because it connects an institutional dispute involving the Election Commission with a broader political challenge to the Union government. Dipke has framed the issue as one of electoral accountability and has sought to mobilise supporters around concerns about voter lists.
The controversy over SIR has become increasingly prominent. Critics have raised concerns about the deletion, verification and restoration of names on electoral rolls. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has maintained that electoral-roll revision is part of its constitutional responsibilities and has disputed allegations that the process is designed to favour the ruling BJP.
Recent reporting has also highlighted disagreements within the Election Commission. According to The Indian Express, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected on multiple occasions to decisions associated with the SIR process. The report has become part of the wider debate about the commission’s internal functioning.
The CJP has used these developments to strengthen its demand for Kumar’s resignation. Dipke has also announced plans for additional demonstrations, including a proposed return to Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The organisation has indicated that it wants to maintain pressure until its demands are addressed.
The campaign has attracted attention beyond political activists. Reports from the Mumbai demonstration said that several film personalities participated or expressed support for concerns about electoral transparency. Their presence brought additional public visibility to a dispute that had previously been concentrated largely within political and institutional circles.
At the same time, the allegations made by political campaigners need to be distinguished from independently established facts. Claims about the number of voters removed from electoral rolls and the political consequences of the revision process have been disputed. The Election Commission has rejected suggestions that its actions amount to manipulation of elections.
Dipke’s threat to broaden the protest toward Modi therefore represents a political escalation rather than a formal institutional process. There is no indication that a demand made by a protest organisation automatically creates any legal consequence for the prime minister.
The issue now has several separate dimensions. One concerns the Election Commission’s procedures for revising voter lists. Another concerns the internal functioning and decision-making of the commission. A third concerns the political response to those developments, including protests by CJP and other groups.
For voters, the central practical question is whether electoral-roll revisions are carried out accurately, transparently and in accordance with applicable law. For political parties and campaigners, the issue has become part of a broader argument about electoral fairness.
Dipke’s latest remarks ensure that the controversy will continue to attract political attention. The next stage will depend on the Election Commission’s responses, the government’s position, the progress of the voter-roll revision process and the scale of further protests announced by the CJP.
