Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led tributes to Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who was seriously injured during a cockpit confrontation aboard a Flydubai flight.
Machchhar was commanding Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, when the emergency occurred. According to reports, the co-pilot allegedly attacked him during the flight and attempted to take control of the aircraft.
The situation quickly became dangerous as the aircraft entered a sharp descent.
There were 174 people aboard the Boeing 737, including 27 children. Reports said the aircraft lost a substantial amount of altitude during the cockpit crisis.
Machchhar, despite suffering serious injuries, reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers then entered the flight deck and helped restrain the alleged attacker.
The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely at Tabuk.
The incident could have resulted in a much larger disaster had the crew and passengers been unable to regain control. Prime Minister Modi later described Machchhar’s actions as an extraordinary demonstration of courage.
“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO,” Modi wrote in a public message, praising his determination to protect the lives of others despite being seriously injured.
During an event marking the centenary of the Union Public Service Commission, Modi went further, saying that Machchhar had prevented another “9/11-like” attack. The Prime Minister’s Office published his remarks, including his appeal for Indians to pray for Machchhar’s recovery.
The captain’s health subsequently became a major concern. After the aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia, Machchhar received emergency treatment. India’s Ministry of External Affairs later confirmed that he had been moved to Abu Dhabi for further treatment.
Indian diplomatic officials also met his family and provided assistance during the crisis.
The incident has attracted international attention. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Machchhar’s actions, while officials from India and other countries also recognised the captain’s courage.
Reports say an Israeli passenger who was a dentist provided medical assistance to the injured captain during the emergency. Other passengers also played a role in restraining the alleged attacker and assisting the flight crew.
The exact circumstances of the confrontation remain under investigation. Flydubai has described the incident as an altercation in the flight deck and said that the aircraft was secured by crew members travelling on board before it was diverted safely.
The case has also raised questions about cockpit security, crew safety and procedures for dealing with emergencies involving flight-deck personnel.
Machchhar has considerable experience in commercial aviation. He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and reportedly accumulated more than 9,500 flying hours there. He later worked as a senior commander and Line Training Captain before joining Flydubai in 2022. His professional profile lists more than 9,750 hours of flying experience.
For millions following the incident, the story has become one of courage under extreme pressure.
Yet investigators still have to establish the full sequence of events and the motive behind the alleged cockpit attack.
