In an interview with Zarafshan Shiraz, Dr Tilak Suvarna, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute, revealed, “Research studies have shown a positive association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, with an estimated 3.5-fold increased risk of heart disease. The mechanism of this association is however not clear. It is hypothesized that the bacteria in the mouth induce an inflammatory and immune response which can independently damage the heart.” Asserting the need to protect our hearts from the deleterious effects of periodontal disease, he listed 5 ways to maintain oral health for a healthy heart. (Pixabay)
