US Urges India and Pakistan to Exercise Restraint Amid Kashmir Crisis

The United States has called on India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. The assault, attributed to Islamist militants, has exacerbated longstanding tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.​

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of de-escalation during separate conversations with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Rubio expressed support for India’s efforts to combat extremism while urging Pakistan to cooperate in investigating the attack. He also stressed the need for both nations to restore direct communication channels and seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis.​

The assault, which occurred on April 22, has led to significant diplomatic fallout. India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines, while Pakistan has reciprocated by closing its airspace and intensifying border security. Both countries have also engaged in military exchanges along the Line of Control, raising concerns about the potential for further escalation.​

The U.S. has refrained from directly accusing Pakistan of involvement in the attack but has called for a neutral investigation. Washington’s diplomatic efforts reflect its strategic interests in maintaining stability in South Asia and preventing a full-scale conflict between India and Pakistan.​

International actors, including the United Nations, have also urged both nations to exercise maximum restraint. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed deep concern over the rising tensions and called for de-escalation through dialogue.​

Analysts warn that the current situation is highly volatile, with the risk of miscalculation leading to unintended military confrontations. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for diplomatic engagement to avert further hostilities.
