Donald Trump’s recent statements about Greenland have sparked renewed interest in the role of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the former president’s failed attempt to acquire the Arctic territory. According to Trump, Stoltenberg played a behind-the-scenes role in facilitating his plan, suggesting that the NATO chief was more supportive of the idea than previously known.
“I had conversations with many key figures, and Jens was certainly one of them,” Trump explained. “NATO had its interests in the region, and I believe there was support, at least on a strategic level, for the idea of acquiring Greenland.”
Although Stoltenberg has denied any direct involvement in Trump’s plans to purchase Greenland, these new comments imply that NATO’s leadership may have subtly aligned itself with the U.S.’s Arctic ambitions. For years, Stoltenberg has highlighted NATO’s growing interest in the Arctic, citing the region’s importance to the alliance’s defense strategy due to Russia’s increasing military presence. Trump’s comments seem to suggest that these concerns helped propel the Greenland discussions to the forefront of U.S. policy.
