In a bold and sweeping accusation, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), West Bengal’s ruling party, has claimed that the 2024 elections in the state were marred by widespread voter manipulation. The party alleged that the Election Commission (EC) played an instrumental role in enabling this ‘massive fraud,’ casting a shadow over the electoral process. According to the TMC, the integrity of the voting system has been severely compromised, leading to an unfair advantage for rival political groups, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

TMC leaders have argued that the actions of the Election Commission officials were not only negligent but possibly even deliberate, as they claim multiple instances of voter suppression and manipulation across constituencies. There are reports from party workers who allege that in certain areas, voters were coerced into casting their ballots for specific candidates under the threat of violence or intimidation.

Further accusations highlight the lack of sufficient safeguards in place, such as ineffective voter identification mechanisms and the manipulation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The TMC has pointed out that certain constituencies, where they have traditionally had strong support, saw unusually high rates of disenfranchisement, raising questions about the transparency of the polling process.

TMC leaders also took aim at the impartiality of the Election Commission, accusing them of favoring the BJP through their inaction during key moments in the electoral process. The party has demanded an immediate probe into these allegations and has requested that the results of specific constituencies be nullified due to these discrepancies. The TMC has threatened to take legal action if the Election Commission fails to address their concerns swiftly.

In response, the Election Commission denied any wrongdoing, stating that they had followed all established protocols during the election. The Commission further asserted that all allegations of EVM tampering and voter manipulation were baseless and unsupported by evidence. Despite the rebuttal, the accusations continue to gain traction, with opposition parties rallying behind TMC’s claims of election malpractice.

As tensions rise, the focus has shifted to how these allegations may affect the future of electoral processes in West Bengal. The controversy threatens to further deepen the political divide between the TMC and BJP, two of the most prominent parties in the state.
