The Supreme Court of India has requested the Union Government to provide its perspective on the regulation of obscene content available on the internet. This comes after numerous reports highlighted the growing problem of explicit and harmful material that is easily accessible to internet users. The court pointed out that although the internet is a vital tool for communication and education, it has become a platform for the circulation of damaging content.
Experts have noted that children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to inappropriate material, which could have detrimental effects on their mental and emotional well-being. The Court’s remarks indicate that there needs to be more stringent measures to protect minors and vulnerable groups from exposure to such content. The Union Government has been urged to take swift action to address this issue, with recommendations for clearer guidelines for online platforms and the implementation of stronger monitoring mechanisms.
This issue is not unique to India. Globally, governments have been grappling with how to handle the ever-growing challenges of regulating online content. With the rapid advancement of technology, it has become more difficult to control the flow of harmful material. As the government is expected to outline its stance on this issue, there is hope that a robust framework will be created to ensure online safety while respecting individual freedoms.
