Jabalpur: The death toll in the Bargi Dam cruise boat tragedy climbed to nine on Friday as rescue personnel intensified search operations in the reservoir waters. The accident occurred after a tourist cruise vessel capsized near the popular Bargi tourism zone in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district.
Officials stated that the boat was carrying a large number of tourists when it reportedly lost balance and overturned. Panic spread instantly as passengers fell into the water, many struggling to survive amid darkness and strong currents.
Emergency response teams, including SDRF divers and local police, launched rescue operations shortly after receiving distress calls. Several passengers were rescued alive with the help of local fishermen who reached the site before official teams.
Nine bodies have been recovered so far, while rescue personnel continue searching for passengers feared missing. Injured survivors are being treated in hospitals under medical supervision.
Witnesses alleged serious safety lapses during the cruise operation. Some passengers claimed that life jackets were either unavailable or not distributed properly before departure. Others questioned why the boat was allowed to operate despite unstable weather conditions.
District authorities have ordered a detailed investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that overcrowding and negligence may have played a role in the accident.
The Madhya Pradesh government expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced compensation assistance. Senior officials assured that strict action would follow against anyone found violating safety regulations.
The tragedy has triggered concern among tourism experts and citizens regarding safety practices in recreational boating services. Bargi Dam attracts thousands of visitors annually, making it one of the region’s most visited tourist destinations.
Activists have demanded mandatory audits of all tourist boats operating across the state. Experts also emphasized the need for trained emergency staff, real-time weather alerts, and stricter licensing systems for private operators.
As rescue teams continue operations, emotional scenes unfolded near the reservoir where anxious relatives waited for updates. Authorities used boats, divers, and underwater equipment to scan deeper portions of the dam area.
