Immigration fraud: 2 Haryana men held for duping Andhra man of ₹2.94 lakh

The cyber crime investigation cell has arrested two men who run an immigration agency for duping a resident of Andhra Pradesh of 2,94,500 on the pretext of providing a visa to Canada.

The accused have been identified as Varinder Singh, 32, of Baroula village in Ambala district and Parminder Singh, 31, of Jharouli Khurd village, Kurukshetra. They were both living in Phase 3B2, Mohali. Police have recovered 26 mobile phones, 22 passports and three laptops from them.

The complainant, Tata Naga Vamsi of Andhra Pradesh told police that he learnt about the firm being run by the accused, Golden Career Consultant in Sector 47, through Facebook. In 2021, the duo told him to come to their office in Chandigarh and pay 1.5 lakh for a work visa to Canada. However, when he arrived, the accused told him that their office is closed and collected the money and his documents behind the Sector 17 bus stand.

Later, he got a call from a Parminder who said that the process had been cancelled due to Covid and he would have to deposit 1,44,500 again. After transferring the cash, the accused stopped taking his calls.

Based on his complaint, the duo was arrested and booked under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC at the Sector 17 police station. The accused were produced in court on Sunday and sent to one day police remand. Police said they are checking how many other people they had duped in a similar way and whether there are others involved in the fraud.

PGI doctor duped of 2.75 lakhs

A PGIMER doctor was duped of 2.75 lakh. The complainant, Dr Swaapnajeet Sahoo of Sector 37-B, stated in his complaint that he had befriended Dr Randy Armstrong, a resident of USA.

Sahoo said in November 2021, Dr Armstrong called him and said that his luggage had been seized and he needed some money. After Sahoo transferred 2.75 lakh into his account, he stopped taking his calls. Police have registered a case under Sections 420 and 120B of the IPC at the Sector 39 police station.

Meanwhile, Isha of Sector 37-C was duped of 78,180 after she tried to purchase an iPhone 11 pro online. She said that an unknown person kept demanding more money from her to deliver the phone. A cheating case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.
