We are conditioned to live the life just like our mothers did. The emotional codependency that they believe in relationships, their unresolved trauma and their inability to put themselves before others also become a part of the way we are brought up. Mothers have the biggest influence in our lives, because our survival depends on them. Hence, when they bring their traumas inherited from their mothers, we often carry that forward and pass it on to our kids. Thus, it forms a toxic cycle of the mother wound which is carried through generations.

The mother wound is the pain that our mothers inherited from their own mothers. This further leads to dysfunctional relationship patterns, not loving ourselves and learning to value other’s need and suppressing the needs of our own. This creates more negative impact in our lives. It leads to the inability to set the boundaries for ourselves and not learning to value the physical appearance. It also leads to having low self-esteem and the insecurity of being abandoned. The mother wound also leads to unhealthy emotional patterns, lack of self-esteem and having the people pleasing attitude.

Psychologist Nicole LePera addressed the issue of mother wound on her Instagram post and wrote, “Their relationships reflected patterns of codependency. So, they unconsciously projected their pain onto us. They unconsciously taught us the same modeling they were taught. This is how cycles are created.”

Healing the mother wound is a long journey, but when we embark on it, we end up empathising with our mothers and discovering their traumas and knowing them in a more real way. Healing is a long journey of discovering ourselves and breaking the shackles of unhealthy emotional patterns. It also involves unlearning a lot of patterns that we once needed to get through life. It also helps us to trust the women around us more.
