How the Acton Double Murder Unfolded: Tutor’s Call, Police Search and Teen Arrest

A routine tutoring appointment turned into the discovery of a devastating family tragedy in Acton, Massachusetts, setting off an overnight police search that ended with the arrest of a 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager.

Authorities say Arjun Aravind is accused of killing his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, inside their Martha Lane home. He has been charged with two counts of murder and several additional offences.

The sequence of events began Tuesday evening.

A tutor was expected at the family residence shortly after 6:30 p.m. for an appointment. When nobody responded and the tutor could not enter the house, concern grew. The tutor contacted Arjun’s father, who was also unable to reach his wife or children.

The father had last seen or spoken with his wife earlier that morning before leaving for work. Siddharth had reportedly been seen around noon.

The father then contacted Acton police and requested a welfare check.

Officers arrived at the Martha Lane property at approximately 6:30 p.m. and discovered two bodies inside the home. Authorities later identified the victims as Sudha Venkatesan and Siddharth Aravind.

Police said both had suffered obvious trauma. Siddharth was found on the first floor, while his mother was located in the finished basement. Officials have not publicly confirmed the exact cause and manner of death, and the alleged weapon remains under investigation.

But one person was missing from the house.

Arjun Aravind was not there when police arrived.

His mother’s green 2014 Honda Accord was also gone.

That immediately became an important part of the investigation. Authorities issued information about Arjun and the vehicle and alerted surrounding law-enforcement agencies. Members of the public were told not to approach the teenager if they encountered him.

The search continued through the night.

Early Wednesday morning, police in the nearby town of Wayland responded to an unrelated alarm at a parking area on Andrew Avenue. There, officers located the missing Honda. Arjun was inside.

Police arrested him without incident, ending the overnight search.

The investigation then moved into a more detailed phase. Detectives began examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths, Arjun’s movements and his digital activity.

According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, investigators discovered that Arjun had recently demonstrated concerning behaviour. Authorities said he had used the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas or fantasy stories about killing his family.

That information has become one of the most closely watched aspects of the case. Prosecutors, however, have not publicly established that the searches themselves provide a complete explanation for the alleged killings.

Arjun was also charged with two counts each of assault and battery on a household or family member and assault and battery. Additional allegations involve the unauthorized use and theft of a motor vehicle.

The murder case is expected to proceed in a court with appropriate jurisdiction. Massachusetts law permits defendants aged 14 or older to be prosecuted as adults for murder.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues. Police have been working with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police, with assistance from several nearby police departments.

For the Acton community, the case has been especially unsettling because of the apparently ordinary circumstances surrounding the discovery. A tutor arriving for a routine appointment, a father unable to reach his family and a police welfare check ultimately revealed the deaths.

The investigation now faces a series of unanswered questions: What happened inside the home? What led to the alleged violence? What role did Arjun’s online activity play? And what happened during the hours between the deaths and his arrest?

Those questions remain central as authorities build the case.
