Elon Musk is known for his outspoken nature and tendency to challenge political figures, but in a rare moment of reflection, the billionaire CEO has expressed regret over recent comments he made about former President Donald Trump. The move comes after days of mounting political pressure, backlash from conservative circles, and concern over federal contracts connected to his companies.
Musk’s initial posts criticized Trump for allegedly blocking the release of documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. He also hinted at the possibility that Trump’s actions were impeachable, framing them as an assault on democratic transparency. The posts, which quickly went viral, attracted attention not just for their substance but for the fact that they came from someone who had previously advised Trump during his first term.
Trump didn’t take long to hit back. In a fiery post on Truth Social, the former president accused Musk of betrayal and made pointed remarks about SpaceX’s reliance on government funding. “Elon was happy to take our money when it suited him. Maybe he should remember who helped build his rocket ships,” Trump wrote.
What followed was a firestorm across media outlets, social platforms, and political arenas. Analysts speculated about whether Trump might follow through on a threat to reevaluate SpaceX’s lucrative government contracts, including those with NASA and the Department of Defense. The idea that politics could jeopardize major aerospace and technology partnerships alarmed investors, prompting Tesla shares to dip briefly.
Faced with growing scrutiny, Musk deleted several posts and later issued a public statement on X, the platform he owns. “In hindsight, my recent remarks about former President Trump were overly confrontational,” Musk wrote. “I believe in accountability and transparency, but I also believe in constructive dialogue—something I failed to achieve with those comments.”
The statement was accompanied by a softening of rhetoric. Musk praised the Trump administration’s early investments in space innovation and job creation, noting that “we did achieve important milestones together.” He also said he hoped to return to a “more productive relationship with all political leaders.”
Insiders close to the situation say Musk was strongly advised by senior figures in both the private and public sectors to de-escalate the situation. One anonymous source described the situation as “a wake-up call” for Musk, who is known for operating without traditional PR buffers. “There are moments when even Elon Musk has to think beyond the tweet,” the source said.
Investors welcomed the shift in tone. Tesla shares rose 2.6% the following morning, and analysts pointed out that SpaceX’s position with government agencies was beginning to stabilize. “There was real concern that the feud could affect future contracts,” said Mariana Zhou, a political risk consultant. “This shows Musk recognizes the gravity of those relationships.”
Notably, Trump has also dialed back the rhetoric. In a recent interview, he said he was “glad Elon came to his senses” and offered guarded praise. “He’s a smart guy. He built amazing things. I just don’t want to see him waste it all by getting political in the wrong way,” Trump said.
While it’s unlikely the two figures will become as close as they once were, there are signs that the worst may be behind them. Musk recently voiced agreement with Trump’s handling of the protests in Los Angeles, stating, “We can disagree on some things and still acknowledge when someone is right.”
The episode underscores the delicate balance business leaders must strike when wading into political waters. For Musk, the experience seems to have prompted a recalibration of how he engages with powerful figures.
“I will always advocate for truth and innovation,” Musk concluded in his post, “but I’ll be more mindful of the tone and platform going forward.”
