Driver Protests Push Policy Shift: Delhi E-Rickshaw Registrations to Resume, Fare Increased

New Delhi: Mounting pressure from e-rickshaw drivers and industry stakeholders has led to a significant policy shift in Delhi, with the government announcing the resumption of e-rickshaw registrations from May 15, 2026. The decision follows widespread discontent within the community, highlighted during a major gathering at Talkatora Stadium.

The meeting, which brought together hundreds of drivers, dealers, and manufacturers, became a platform for raising critical issues affecting the sector. From economic hardships to regulatory confusion, participants voiced a wide range of concerns.

Drivers spoke candidly about the challenges they face on a daily basis. Many alleged that they are often unfairly targeted during traffic disputes and law enforcement checks. “We are easy targets because we are unorganized,” said one driver, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in attendance.

Another recurring issue was the alleged inconsistency in regulatory enforcement. Drivers claimed that certain vehicles operating without proper compliance continue to function due to unofficial approvals, while law-abiding drivers are penalized.

The registration freeze, which began in December, was a major point of contention. Dealers reported severe financial losses, with many struggling to stay afloat. The halt not only disrupted business but also limited opportunities for new drivers entering the sector.

In response to these concerns, the Delhi Transport Minister assured stakeholders that the government recognizes their contribution to urban mobility. He announced that registrations would reopen from May 15, offering a fresh start to the sector.

Additionally, a fare revision was declared, increasing the minimum fare to ₹20 from May 1. While the move is intended to improve driver earnings, it has received mixed reactions. Some drivers see it as a necessary adjustment, while others worry about potential resistance from commuters.

The gathering also highlighted the need for systemic reforms. Participants called for clearer guidelines, uniform enforcement, and measures to protect drivers from harassment. Many emphasized that policy changes must be accompanied by accountability at the ground level.

E-rickshaws are an essential part of Delhi’s transport ecosystem, providing affordable and eco-friendly travel options. They also serve as a source of livelihood for thousands of families.

However, the sector’s growth has been hindered by regulatory challenges and operational uncertainties. Without addressing these issues, stakeholders fear that the benefits of recent announcements may be short-lived.

The overall mood at the event was one of cautious optimism. While the government’s response has been welcomed, drivers and dealers remain vigilant, seeking concrete action rather than assurances.
