West Indies held on to draw the first Test against England after the Joe Root-led team made a bold declaration on the final day. Needing 286 runs to win from 70 overs, West Indies lost too many wickets after lunch and went into survival mode, finishing on 147-4. Nkrumah Bonner was unbeaten on 38 after facing 138 balls and Jason Holder 37 not out after 101.

While the Test resulted in a draw, England’s decision to drag the Test to the last over didn’t go down well with Carlos Brathwaite, who termed it “disrespectful” when two set batters at the crease didn’t lead to England agreeing to a draw. Root opted to shake hands with just five of the day’s allocated deliveries remaining.

“If I were a senior player in the West Indies dressing room, I would have found it a bit disrespectful that in the last hour, with two set batsmen playing as they were and the pitch offering nothing, England still felt they could get six wickets, going all the way down to five balls left,” Brathwaite told BT Sport.

“Would England have done that if it were an Ashes Test? Would they have done that against India, New Zealand, Pakistan?”

“I think the answer is no, so why have they done it against us? If West Indies need any sort of steely determination added, I think that passage of play should have given them that. They should be thinking ‘we have two Tests now to prove we are better than England think we are’,” he further added.

Bonner and Holder held out for an unbeaten stand of 80, after their key stand of 79 in the first innings. Bonner, 33, had also notched up a marathon 123 in the first innings. He was named Player of the Match as the hosts escaped with a draw.

“I like to bat at this venue. I think it’s a very good wicket,” said Bonner, whose previous century also came at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. “I just want to play test cricket. Over the years I’ve developed that discipline to bat long.”

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said Bonner had told him before the match that he wanted to bat for at least 300 balls. “The determination he had was an example for us first innings and today he came again and really showed his worth,” Brathwaite said. “He has a special mindset and set an example for us to follow.”
