Trump Suggests Ukraine ‘Let Go’ of Crimea to End War, Sparking Backlash

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited controversy by suggesting Ukraine should “let go” of Crimea as a pathway to peace with Russia. Trump’s remarks, delivered during a televised interview, have drawn sharp criticism from both international leaders and U.S. lawmakers, many of whom see the proposal as legitimizing territorial aggression.

“Crimea was taken under Obama. It’s gone,” Trump said. “Zelenskyy should be focused on saving lives, not fighting over something that may never come back.”

The suggestion, seen as undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty, prompted immediate response from Kyiv. A senior advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, “Crimea is not a bargaining chip. Our position is clear: there is no peace without the restoration of our territorial integrity.”

Trump’s comments also drew condemnation from U.S. allies in Europe. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called the remarks “dangerous” and “ignorant of the principles of international law,” while French President Emmanuel Macron warned that rewarding military conquest with diplomacy would only lead to further global instability.

Despite the backlash, Trump doubled down on his stance during a campaign rally in Arizona, saying, “Sometimes peace comes from hard choices. I know how to make those deals — Zelenskyy doesn’t.”

Analysts say the former president’s stance could reflect a broader shift in isolationist sentiments among segments of the American electorate, particularly as U.S. support for the war faces growing scrutiny ahead of the 2024 election. However, the Biden administration has maintained its unwavering support for Ukraine’s right to reclaim all occupied territories, including Crimea.

For now, Trump’s comments have added a polarizing voice to an already complex international crisis, raising new questions about how future U.S. leadership might influence the trajectory of the war.
