Three Russian military aircraft, including an IL-76 transport aircraft, have landed at Noida Airport as India steps up preparations for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit and the BRICS Summit.
The aircraft arrived early Tuesday morning, around 5:30 a.m., according to reports. Their arrival marked the first reported landing by foreign aircraft at the newly operational Noida Airport. A Russian advance team and military officials were reportedly among those travelling on the aircraft.
The IL-76 is a heavy military transport aircraft designed to carry personnel, equipment and cargo over long distances. Its presence at Noida Airport indicates the logistical nature of the Russian deployment ahead of the high-profile diplomatic programme.
The aircraft remained parked at the airport through Wednesday. Indian security personnel and Russian teams were reported to be monitoring the aircraft and coordinating security arrangements.
The timing of the landing is significant. The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled for September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to participate in the summit, making preparations for his arrival a major component of the overall security and logistical planning.
Noida Airport’s involvement is particularly noteworthy because foreign military aircraft visiting India have traditionally used Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Russian aircraft landing therefore gives the new airport an early role in handling an important international delegation.
The airport’s proximity to Delhi and its position within the National Capital Region make it strategically useful for major events. Its involvement can help distribute aviation and logistical requirements across the region, particularly during periods of heightened international activity.
The Russian advance team’s arrival is also significant from a security perspective. High-level visits require extensive coordination between visiting teams and Indian agencies. Airport security, ground movement, communications and other operational requirements have to be planned before the main delegation arrives.
India-Russia relations add another layer of importance to Putin’s visit. Defence cooperation remains one of the most important components of the bilateral relationship. According to recent reports, discussions could include the delivery of remaining S-400 air-defence systems, possible Russian cooperation on the Su-57 fighter aircraft and future developments in the BrahMos missile programme.
The S-400 programme has been a major defence partnership between India and Russia, while BrahMos represents one of the most prominent examples of joint defence development between the two countries.
However, the immediate significance of the three aircraft is logistical rather than evidence of any particular agreement. Their presence indicates that preparations for the Russian presidential visit are already underway.
For Noida Airport, the landing represents an important early test. The facility is now being used in connection with an international diplomatic event involving senior foreign officials.
As the BRICS Summit approaches, the arrival of the Russian aircraft has highlighted the expanding role of Noida Airport in the NCR’s international aviation network.
