A celebratory parade for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic Indian Premier League (IPL) victory ended in tragedy on June 4, 2025, when a massive crowd surge outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in a deadly stampede, killing 11 people and injuring over 50. In the aftermath, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced the suspension of several high-ranking police officials, citing gross negligence in crowd management.
The suspended officials include Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayanand, Additional Commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar H. Tekkannavar. The state government has also ordered a detailed investigation led by retired High Court Justice Michael Cunha to determine the chain of failures that led to the calamity.
The stampede occurred during the early hours of the morning, as tens of thousands of RCB fans converged on the area around Chinnaswamy Stadium. The euphoria over the team’s maiden IPL title quickly gave way to horror as overcrowding near one of the main entry gates triggered panic. Eyewitnesses reported that the police were overwhelmed and unable to manage the surging crowd, which led to people being trampled in the chaos.
Metro services were reportedly suspended at key stations near the stadium, aggravating the situation and concentrating the footfall near a few accessible routes. Social media videos showed people trying to scale barriers and being crushed as the crowd surged forward.
“We are taking this tragedy very seriously. The lapses in coordination, planning, and basic crowd control measures cannot be ignored,” said CM Siddaramaiah in a press briefing. “This should have been a moment of celebration for the city and the state, but it turned into a nightmare due to preventable mistakes.”
The Chief Minister has announced ₹10 lakh compensation to the families of each deceased individual and assured full medical care for the injured. The government has also promised that all guilty parties—whether in the police, the event management firm, or cricket authorities—will be held accountable.
Opposition parties have strongly condemned the government’s handling of the event. BJP leaders have demanded CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar take moral responsibility and resign. Former CM Basavaraj Bommai termed the event a “criminal failure of governance” and called for a judicial probe.
In addition to suspensions, senior executives from the event’s organizing partners—RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and DNA Entertainment Networks—are being investigated for negligence. Preliminary findings suggest there was no proper cap on the number of people attending and no emergency protocol in place for a crowd of that size.
This incident has highlighted glaring loopholes in how public events are managed in urban India. Experts have long warned that without proper crowd modeling, emergency exits, and coordination between civic and police authorities, such events can spiral into disasters.
The probe by Justice Cunha is expected to submit its report within four weeks. Meanwhile, the CID has begun questioning officers and event organizers. “This is a case of both omission and commission. Both negligence and perhaps a willful underestimation of risk,” a senior CID official said under the condition of anonymity.
For many Bengaluru residents, this tragedy has brought back painful memories of similar incidents in Indian cities where poor planning has led to avoidable loss of life. Civil society groups have called for mandatory disaster management audits for all large-scale events in public spaces.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and stated they would cooperate fully with all investigations. “What was meant to be a moment of joy for our fans has turned into a time of mourning. We are devastated and share the grief of the affected families,” the statement read.
