Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Thailand marks a significant step in strengthening India’s strategic role in the Bay of Bengal region. As the BIMSTEC summit kicks off in Bangkok, the Indian leader joins other heads of state and government from seven countries to address critical issues of regional importance.
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has become an essential platform for India to engage with its neighbors, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal. The summit provides a valuable opportunity for the participating countries to come together and explore new avenues of cooperation on security, trade, and development.
This year’s summit is particularly relevant given the changing geopolitical landscape, including the rising influence of China in the Indo-Pacific. India’s commitment to regional stability and prosperity will be underscored through collaborative projects and joint initiatives discussed during the summit.
The PM’s participation will not only focus on economic diplomacy but will also emphasize India’s strategic role in ensuring maritime security, combating terrorism, and strengthening economic linkages in the region. As trade ties between the member countries grow, PM Modi is expected to promote initiatives aimed at improving connectivity, such as the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and various energy infrastructure projects.
In addition to his participation in the summit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with key leaders, which will further reinforce India’s diplomatic standing in the region.
