Passengers planning train journeys must now think twice before cancelling tickets, as Indian Railways has introduced revised cancellation charges that significantly impact refund amounts.
The updated rules are structured to penalize late cancellations more heavily. While early cancellations still allow passengers to recover most of their ticket cost, the refund decreases progressively as the departure time nears.
For confirmed tickets cancelled more than 48 hours in advance, standard deductions apply, which vary by class. However, cancellations within 48 hours attract percentage-based deductions, marking a major shift from the earlier flat-fee system.
Between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure, up to 25% of the fare may be deducted. If the cancellation is made within 12 hours to 4 hours before departure, the deduction can rise to 50%.
No refund is typically provided for cancellations made after chart preparation, which usually occurs a few hours before departure. This rule is particularly important for passengers who delay cancellation decisions.
The changes are intended to reduce the number of vacant seats and improve ticket availability for waitlisted passengers. Officials from Indian Railways emphasize that better planning by passengers will lead to a more efficient reservation system.
Digital platforms like IRCTC play a key role in implementing the new rules. Passengers can easily cancel tickets online and receive refunds directly into their accounts.
Experts suggest that travelers should finalize plans before booking tickets or opt for flexible travel dates. The revised cancellation charges make it more important than ever to avoid last-minute changes.
While the new policy may initially face resistance, it is expected to bring long-term benefits by improving seat utilization and reducing uncertainty in train travel.
