With less than a week left for the last day (July 31) to file the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2021-22, the Income Tax Department said on Monday that more than three crore returns have been filed through the e-filing portal to date.
“More than 3 crore ITRs for AY (Assessment Year) 2022-23 have been filed on the e-filing portal till 25th July 2022. The due date to file ITR for AY 2022-23 is 31st July 2022. We urge you to file your ITR at the earliest, if not filed as yet,” the department tweeted.
Till July 20, more than 2.3 crore returns were filed for the financial year 2021-22, a report by news agency PTI said.
The ITR filing is an annual activity which is seen as a duty of every citizen of the country. Taxpayers can claim the refund of the excess tax paid/deducted during a financial year by filing it.
The Income Tax Department has prescribed 7 types of ITR forms, whose applicability depends on the nature and the amount of income and the type of taxpayer, PTI further reported.
With the deadline for filing returns for the financial year 2021-22 being July 31, the Union government said it has no plan to extend the deadline. Over the last two financial years, the deadline had been extended.
The Income Tax Department has established an independent portal for e-filing of income tax returns — incometaxindia.gov.in. There are also private entities, registered by the department that permit taxpayers to e-file through their websites.
