Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal commissioner has directed all ward officers in the city to do a self-check for cleanliness. In a review meeting for the implementation of Swachh Survekshan, nodal officers were appointed by NMMC to survey each ward before a team from Delhi comes for the survey.

Usually, only nodal officers are assigned but this time commissioner Abhijit Bangar has made it a two-tier check. Additionally, the commissioner has also asked authorities to issue an order directing all shops in Navi Mumbai to keep a dustbin outside their shops so that the customers do not litter footpaths and roads.

“Navi Mumbai is a city with great potential for cleanliness, we need to be more vigilant and no negligence on the part of hygiene standards is expected,” Bangar said.

Even as it is mandatory for citizens to segregate wet, dry and hazardous household waste at their homes and also to dispose of it separately in municipal waste trucks, there are shortcomings hence the commissioner has asked the officers to reach out to the citizens.

He also directed them to ensure that the wet waste processing projects, which are being implemented following the solid waste management regulations, are being carried out regularly in the societies and institutions where large scale waste is being generated.

“Besides, the housing societies, special attention also needs to be given to the waste being dumped by people inside the road dividers. Regular attention should be paid to the cleanliness of main road dividers as well as road cleaning. No negligence would be tolerated in the maintenance of public toilets as well,” Banagar said.

“Since the central level examination of Swachh Survekshan will take place without prior notice, we need to be vigilant and it is important to do self-introspection before the central examination. For this, a daily check should be carried out to ensure that action is being taken as per the checklist drawn in the Swachh Survekshan. If any error is found, it should be brought to the notice of the authorities,” he added.
