Actor Jacqueline Fernandez, who hails from Sri Lanka, penned a long note defending her country, which is facing a severe economic and political crisis currently. Sri Lanka is battling food and fuel scarcity, which is affecting a large number of the people in the island nation. The economy has been in a free-fall since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Jacqueline took to social media on Monday to address the crisis. (Also Read: Jacqueline Fernandez requests media for privacy as pics with Sukesh Chandrashekhar go viral: ‘Going through rough patch’)

Sharing a picture of Sri Lankan flag, Jacqueline wrote, “As a Srilankan, it is heartbreaking to see what my country and countrymen are going through. I have been flooded with a lot of opinions since this began from around the world. I would say, do not be too quick to pass a judgement and vilify any group based on what is shown. The world and my people do not need another judgement, they need empathy and support. 2-minutes of silent prayer for their strength and well-being will bring you much closer to them than a comment based on a loose grasp of the situation.”

She added, “To my country and countrymen, I am hoping this situation comes to an end soon and through means which are peaceful and for the benefit of the people. Praying for immense strength to those dealing with this. Peace to all!” She also wrote in Sinhala, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Though Jacqueline was born in Bahrain, her father Elroy is a Sri Lankan. After finishing her college, she even did a few TV shows in Sri Lanka. Jacqueline won the title of Miss Universe Sri Lanka in 2006 and represented Sri Lanka at the world Miss Universe 2006 pageant held in Los Angeles.

Sri Lanka is currently facing a foreign exchange shortage, which has, incidentally, affected its capacity to import food and fuel, leading to the power cuts in the country. The shortage of essential goods forced Sri Lanka to seek assistance from friendly countries.

People in Sri Lanka have been expressing uncertainty and demanding a new leader in the country amid the ongoing political instability and economic crisis in the country. On Thursday, several protestors gathered outside the residence of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Amidst the unrest, after protests, Sri Lanka imposed a curfew on Saturday from 6 pm.
