India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the Indian government is actively taking steps to safeguard its exports as the United States has indicated a potential increase in tariffs. The looming threat of higher tariffs could impact a range of Indian exports, including textiles, steel, and agricultural products. Sitharaman assured that the government is working closely with stakeholders to develop countermeasures to mitigate the possible adverse effects of the tariffs.
India has long been one of the world’s largest exporters, and trade with the US is of particular importance. The Indian government has reportedly begun discussions with trade experts and industry leaders to explore strategies, including diversification of export markets, negotiating trade agreements, and seeking support from international trade bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In her address, Sitharaman emphasized that India’s resilience in facing global challenges would ensure that the country’s exports continue to grow, despite the potential tariffs. The government is also reviewing its trade policies to ensure better protection for key sectors.
