Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards continues to be the talk of the town. The incident got multiple mentions at the Grammy Awards as well, which was held on Sunday night exactly a week after the Oscars. While host Trevor Noah made sure to mention the controversy in his opening monologue, comedian Nate Bargatze arrived in a helmet to avoid getting slapped. After slapping Chris at the Oscars for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, Will had yelled at the comedian and asked him to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth. Trevor Noah made an indirect reference to this as he began his hosting duties. He said, “Don’t even think of this as an award show. It’s a concert where we are giving out awards, we will be listening to music, dancing, sing, keeping people’s names out of our mouths and we are going to give people awards all throughout the night. So let’s get straight into it.”

Another notable mention of the incident was when Questlove took to the stage. The musician was a witness to the incident and it was him who went to the Oscars stage after Will Smith returned to his seat. He had won an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category for his directorial debut Summer of Soul, and was presented the award by Chris Rock right after the comedian was slapped.

At the Grammys, where he was invited to present an award, Questlove joked, “All right, I am going to present this award and I trust that you people will stay 500 feet away from me. As they say, it is far better to give than to receive. Well, I’m not so sure about that because last Sunday it felt pretty good to receive.”

The slapgate was mentioned once again when LeVar Burton and Nate Bargatze took to the Grammys stage. Television host LeVar introduced Nate by saying, “I want to warn you all that our next presenter is a comedian. If you know what I mean. So, I need to caution everybody. Remain in your seats and keep your hands to yourself.”

Nate then arrived on the stage wearing a large black helmet to loud laughter from the audience. The comedian joked, “They said comedians have to wear these now at awards shows during the joke parts. It doesn’t even cover your face, I think it just focuses where you would hit me.” He later said, “this is stupid, I will take it off,” as he removed his helmet and proceeded to present the award for Best Spoken Word Album.
