The mystery behind one of India’s most haunting recent crimes—the death of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya—has been unraveled, revealing a shocking web of betrayal. Authorities have confirmed that Raja’s wife, Sonam, plotted his murder with her lover, who used the alias “Sanjay Verma” but is now identified as Raj Kushwaha.
Raja and Sonam’s marriage on May 11 had seemed traditional, celebrated with joy in their Indore neighborhood. But within days, cracks beneath the surface led to a murder meticulously planned and executed hundreds of kilometers away.
By May 22, the couple had reached Nongriat, a village known for its waterfalls and jungle trails. They were seen together for the last time on May 23. When Raja’s body was discovered at the base of a cliff on June 2, decomposing and bearing signs of foul play, authorities initially suspected an accident. That theory quickly dissolved under the weight of shocking revelations.
Sonam had been in close contact with Raj Kushwaha, her brother’s employee, for over six months. Police traced over 200 late-night phone calls between the two, many lasting more than an hour. Surveillance and digital footprints revealed that the two had made plans for months. Their opportunity came in the guise of the honeymoon.
On the day of the murder, three Hindi-speaking men joined the couple. These men—now confirmed to be hired assassins—allegedly assisted Sonam and Raj in murdering Raja. Eyewitnesses saw them trekking together. Later, one of the men reportedly struck Raja with a blunt weapon before pushing him off the cliff. A local hatchet covered in dried blood was recovered at the scene.
Sonam initially returned to Uttar Pradesh, where she lay low for days. Finally, under growing pressure, she turned herself in on June 9. During interrogation, she confessed to having watched as the killers took Raja’s life. Raj Kushwaha was arrested in Madhya Pradesh the same week, along with the hired killers.
Raja’s family is demanding the harshest punishment. “My son was innocent. He wanted to love and build a future. She betrayed him with her lover,” said his grieving mother. Meanwhile, Sonam’s relatives claim she is innocent, manipulated by Raj, and that her confession was coerced.
Legal experts believe the case will hinge on digital evidence and the testimonies of the co-accused. The Meghalaya SIT is working to compile a detailed charge sheet, expected to be filed in early July.
As the legal battle begins, the question on everyone’s mind remains: How could such a meticulously planned murder be executed in plain sight—under the guise of love?
