Delhi Police are investigating the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl whose decomposed body was discovered in an open field in Swaroop Nagar several days after the suspected crime.
The case surfaced after residents contacted police on September 13. According to reports, people in the area noticed stray dogs around a body lying in the field near Kushak Road. Police reached the location and found badly decomposed remains.
The condition of the body made identification difficult. Police said the decomposition was so advanced that investigators could not immediately determine whether the remains belonged to a man or woman. Some parts of the body had also reportedly been eaten by stray dogs, while one hand was found separated.
Investigators later established that the remains belonged to a teenage girl. Police said medical examination confirmed rape and that the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds.
The suspected crime is believed by investigators to have taken place around September 11, while the body was discovered two days later. The exact sequence of events remains subject to investigation.
Police said the victim was acquainted with the suspects. According to the police account, she travelled with them in a tempo on the day of the incident. Investigators are examining what happened during the journey and afterward.
The absence of a conventional eyewitness made the early investigation difficult. Police therefore relied heavily on CCTV footage from the area.
More than 50 CCTV cameras were examined, according to investigators. A tempo was noticed moving near the suspected location at a relevant time. Although the registration number was not clearly visible in the initial footage because of darkness, investigators followed the vehicle through additional CCTV recordings.
The tempo was eventually traced to Khadda Colony. Police questioned the driver and said information obtained during questioning helped them identify three additional suspects.
Four people were subsequently apprehended, including three juveniles. Police identified the adult suspect as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu. The juveniles were reported to be aged 16 and 17.
Police have also reported the recovery of two knives, clothing allegedly connected with the suspects and the tempo. These items are expected to form part of the forensic investigation.
The victim’s family had not reported her missing before the body was discovered. Police said relatives explained that she would sometimes leave home and return after a few days.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the BNS and POCSO Act. Since some of the suspects are juveniles, their cases will also be handled according to applicable juvenile-justice procedures.
Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV recordings, forensic material and other evidence. Authorities are also trying to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual assault and murder and determine whether anyone else was involved.
The investigation remains active, and allegations against the suspects will ultimately have to be tested through the legal process.
