Ishrat Jahan, arrested under UAPA, was granted an interim bail for 10 days to get married in June 2020.

A Delhi court on Monday granted former Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan bail in a case that pertained to a larger conspiracy in the 2020 Delhi riots. Last month, an order on her bail plea was reserved. Advocate Pradeep Teotia who appeared on behalf of Ishrat Jahan had argued that there was no evidence to show her involvement in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case and she has been falsely implicated.

Ishrat Jahan was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for her alleged involvement in the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020, in which 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured. She was the Congress councillor from 2012-17 and was a member of the All India Congress Committee.

She was granted an interim bail for 10 days to get married in June 2020.

“They have created a fear amongst people. She has been a lawyer. She was a young political person. She has a brilliant acumen. I was victorious from a ward where Muslims were less in number. Both the sects had given vote to her. No Muslim had even won from the said ward,” Ishrat Jahan’s counsel had argued in the court.
