In an unfortunate incident that unfolded on February 24, 2025, the Bangladesh Air Force base located in Cox’s Bazar became the site of a deadly assault, leaving one individual dead and several others injured. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the afternoon, began with a routine security check. However, the situation escalated when a confrontation broke out between the base’s personnel and a local group from Samitipara, a nearby neighborhood.
The altercation started when an individual, later identified as Shihab Kabir, a local shopkeeper, was stopped by the military personnel for failing to wear a helmet while riding his motorcycle. Kabir was taken inside the base for questioning. His detention quickly provoked anger among local residents, who gathered in large numbers near the military installation. It was reported that the crowd grew increasingly hostile, throwing stones and other objects at the soldiers guarding the base.
In response to the growing tension and potential danger, military personnel fired blank rounds into the air as a means of dispersing the crowd. Despite these efforts, the situation spiraled out of control, and violence ensued. According to local authorities, Shihab Kabir was shot during the clash and succumbed to his injuries. Several others, both civilians and military personnel, were reported injured, though their conditions have not been disclosed.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement condemning the attack, blaming “miscreants” for the violence. The ISPR emphasized that the military personnel acted within the bounds of the law and that the attack was an unprovoked act of aggression against the airbase. Authorities have since tightened security around the area, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the incident.
