A group of Congress leaders, known as G-23 ,is meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss the situation in the party after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, where the party reposed its faith on Sonia Gandhi and asked her to make necessary and comprehensive changes in the organisation following humiliating losses in five states.

According to a member of the G-23, the meeting might take place over dinner at Kapil Sibal’s residence. The former Union minister, whose Rajya Sabha term is coming to an end, has fired salvos against Rahul Gandhi and the party high command. In an interview to Indian Express on Tuesday, he questioned how Rahul Gandhi, who doesn’t hold any formal position in the party, went to Punjab and announced Charanjit Singh Channi’s name as the chief ministerial candidate. He also said the Gandhis should step away from the leadership of the party.

The G-23 meeting is set to see the senior leaders, who first formed a grouping when 23 people wrote to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 demanding internal elections and reform, planning their next move amid rumblings in the party. So far, there is no indication of greater accommodation of the dissidents in the organisation even as the grip of the Gandhi family on the party remains strong. The CWC on Sunday rejected Sonia Gandhi’s offer of stepping down, along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

A G-23 leader suggested that the group might wait and see how far organisational changes happen after the poll debacle. “The CWC has asked Sonia Gandhi to make necessary and comprehensive changes. We will see how these changes are taking place,” said the leader, requesting anonymity.

On Tuesday, a day before G23’s proposed meeting, Sonia Gandhi asked for the resignation of the state party chiefs of Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Uttar Pradesh to reorganise these state units.

Many more changes are expected to take place, Congress leaders suggested.

But the unity of the G-23 might be fragmenting, some leaders indicated.

While some members of the G-23 stepped up attacks against the high command, other leaders such as Mukul Wasnik or Shashi Tharoor have stopped attending these meetings, according to people aware of the matter who asked not to be named. On Tuesday, another prominent member, former Karnataka CM Veerappa Moily has abandoned the group. “They have institutionalised G23, which was never the idea. Also, I don’t approve their relentless attack on the Congress leadership in this hour of crisis,” he told HT.

The G-23 group has repeatedly clarified that it doesn’t want to destabilise the party and is focussed on pushing through internal reforms and elections that will help the party take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in elections. But it faces attacks from Gandhi family loyalists, who say the G-23 is hurting the party with its public criticism.

“Kapil Sibal isn’t a person from Congress culture. He’s a renowned advocate who entered Congress. He got many chances – been union minister, party spokesperson etc because of the blessings of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. It’s not expected from a person who doesn’t know ABC of Congress to give such statements,” said Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot.
