Amritsar: A day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stormed to power in Punjab with a staggering mandate, state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu said the voters took a “good decision” and “laid a new foundation.”

“I congratulate the people of Punjab. They took such a good decision and laid a new foundation by changing the traditional system of Punjab. People are never wrong. People’s voice is God’s voice and their verdict should be accepted with humility,” Sidhu, who lost the Amritsar East seat to AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur, said.

The AAP romped home in 92 of Punjab’s 117 assembly constituencies while the Congress slumped to a mere 18 seats in the assembly, far below the 77 it won in 2017. The Congress campaign was marred by infighting, with former chief minister Amarinder Singh being replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi just four months before the elections.

“When Channi’s name was announced as CM face, I backed him. I cooperated during the elections and he even visited my constituency. He was selected by the high command. Pointing fingers is narrow thinking. Our intention is big, our thinking is big. It is not bound by selfishness,” Sidhu said.

The 58-year-old said he was not bogged down by the electoral setback and will continue working for the people.

““My relation with people is not that of victory or defeat. I see God in the people of Punjab. My aim is Punjab’s welfare, I have been firm on this. I always stood with Punjab and will remain so. When someone has a higher aim and is in love with Punjab, he doesn’t care about win or loss.”
