Border villages in Jammu and Kashmir are in mourning after seven civilians, including a child, were killed and 38 others injured in unprovoked shelling by the Pakistan Army across the Line of Control (LoC). The attack occurred in the Mendhar and Balakote sectors, where mortar and heavy artillery rounds struck homes, farms, and public buildings without any military provocation from the Indian side.

According to eyewitnesses, the shelling began without warning in the early hours of the morning, catching many villagers as they prepared for the day. “It was like the sky opened up and started throwing fire at us,” said 60-year-old Abdul Qayoom, whose son was among the dead. Several families were trapped inside their houses as explosions shook the ground and shrapnel flew in all directions.

Emergency medical teams and army units responded quickly, evacuating the wounded to nearby hospitals. Many victims were treated for head injuries, burns, and limb fractures. Schools in the area were shut down, and mobile networks briefly collapsed due to infrastructure damage.

The Indian Army issued a statement condemning the Pakistani action and affirming that retaliatory strikes had been conducted in response. Meanwhile, local leaders urged the central government to increase the number of underground bunkers in border villages and deploy more security personnel to safeguard vulnerable populations.

Residents say this is one of the deadliest incidents in recent memory and worry that such attacks may become more frequent. The incident has not only claimed innocent lives but also sparked new concerns over the safety and future of life near the LoC.
