Tamil Nadu’s political temperature soared today when top BJP leaders, including K. Annamalai, the state president, and Tamilisai Soundararajan, the former Governor, were detained by the police while attempting to stage a protest outside the headquarters of Tasmac, the state’s government-run liquor retailer. The protest was centered around the state’s liquor policies, which have been a longstanding issue in Tamil Nadu’s political discourse.

BJP’s stance on the Tasmac monopoly is well-documented, with party leaders accusing the state government of being overly reliant on liquor sales for revenue generation. The protest, which was scheduled to begin in the morning, was quickly disrupted when police forces arrived on the scene, arresting the BJP leaders under section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows for preventive arrests in case of public disturbances.

In a statement released after their arrest, Annamalai claimed that the DMK government has turned a blind eye to the dangers of alcohol addiction, which is increasingly becoming a public health crisis. The BJP has long been advocating for the closure of Tasmac outlets across the state, calling them a “social menace.”

Tamilisai Soundararajan, who was also detained at the scene, expressed her displeasure over the police’s actions, accusing the state government of using its machinery to stifle political opposition. As the protests grew louder, BJP workers gathered in solidarity, chanting slogans against the state’s liquor policies and demanding an immediate response from the ruling government.

Political observers suggest that this event marks a crucial juncture in Tamil Nadu’s political rivalry between the ruling DMK and opposition parties like the BJP. The issue of alcohol regulation and its social implications has been a contentious subject in Tamil Nadu, where Tasmac outlets are not only a source of government revenue but also a critical issue for public health and welfare advocates.
