BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday tweeted about the uncertainities being faced by the students who are returning to India from Ukraine. Thousands have come back to the country since Moscow’s attack on Kyiv began last week. In a tweet in Hindi, the 41-year-old MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit wrote: “The Ukraine crisis has affected the mental health of thousands of students. On one hand, they have bitter memories of the battleground, and on the other hand, their future hangs in the balance.”
“We will have to relax rules to accomodate these students in the Indian institutions. Their worries and their parents’ worries should be our worries,” the BJP leader, who has criticised his own party’s decisions several times in the past, further wrote. The tweet comes a day after the government said that more than 13,000 Indians have been brought back from Ukraine on special flights arranged via the border countries of Poland, Romania, Hungary and the Slovak Republic.
Many appeals have been shared on social media in the last one week as Russia intensified the attack on major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, the second largest city.
Last week, Varun Gandhi took a veiled dig at the government saying more than 15,000 students were stuck amid war because “right decisions were not taken at the right time”. The tweet also had a video appeal.

In an escalation of tensions, Kyiv had said on Friday that Russia’s attack on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant had caused fire as the world held its breath. Moscow was accused of “nuclear terror” in the hours that followed.
Amid the worsening of crisis, desperate families in India have been demanding the safe return of students and other citizens.
On Friday, Congress’s Rahul Gandhi had lashed out at leaders over ‘irresponsible comments’ on Ukraine. “There is a war in Ukraine. Thousands of students from India study there. Our youths are stuck there amid bombing. These youths are sending videos of appeals to save them. The Prime Minister’s men say these people (students) went to Ukraine because they did not get admission to medical colleges in India. They (students) failed here and so went there (to Ukraine). Are these not the students from India? Are they not ours? Is it not your (government’s) responsibility to bring them back?” he asked.
He was apparently refering to Union minister Pralhad Joshi’s remarks that “90 per cent of Indians won’t clear exams”.
