Aam Aadmi Party leader Prithvi Reddy on Saturday said in four to six weeks, many big names in Karnataka will be joining the party, and an announcement for the same would be made soon.

“There were doubts about the AAP’s New Delhi model working outside of the capital city. These doubts have been cleared after the results of Punjab. A similar change will certainly come in Karnataka as well,” Reddy said.

Talking to the media, he said that the party will identify candidates for next year’s assembly elections early so that they could work on their respective constituencies.

”We will give those candidates nine to ten months to reach out to every house in the constituency. Congress treats minorities as their vote bank, and the BJP treats majority Hindus as their vote bank. AAP caters to the needs of the poor and common people who care about good governance,” he added.

The AAP had contested around 28 seats in the 2018 Karnataka assembly elections but managed just 0.06% of the total votes and 0.55% of the votes from the seats it contested.

The party did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections based on its poor outing the previous year.

Riding high on a resounding victory in the Punjab assembly elections, AAP hopes to make a similar impact in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls, dominated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the past decade. The upcoming polls for 243 wards of the BBMP are likely to be held in May this year. The AAP has taken an active part to highlight issues like the crumbling infrastructure in the city.

“We have over 200 candidates out of the 243 (wards), and this (Punjab results) will have an impact as more and more people join us,” Vijay Shastrimath, the spokesperson for the AAP in Karnataka, told HT on Thursday after the Punjab win.

“Our agenda is the development, and we don’t talk (on issues) which other parties speak. People accepted this concept,” he added.

BJP has been in power at the BBMP since 2010, winning the elections twice since then. However, there have been no elections since September 2020.

BJP’s former corporators have accused the senior leadership of delaying the elections.

“The BJP themselves do not want elections as the state leaders are running the show,” said one former BJP corporator, requesting anonymity.

The BBMP elections, originally to be held soon after the council’s term ended, was delayed, with Basavaraj Bommai-led state government saying that it was on account of the Supreme Court striking down the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in local body polls.

Of the erstwhile 198 wards, at least 68 were reserved for OBC candidates.

“Let the BBMP elections come whenever. We would contest them successfully,” Bommai had said in January after a cabinet meeting.

The Supreme Court on February 17 had agreed to look into a plea in connection with holding the BBMP elections. (Is this the latest we know?)

The Zilla and taluka panchayat elections, too, have been delayed amid allegations that the BJP leadership does not want to hold them to “retain control over local administration”, people aware of the developments said.
