KOLKATA: The West Bengal unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), began its 26th state conference in Kolkata on Tuesday to discuss a host of issues including the party’s inability to secure any seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the assembly polls held last year.
CPI(M) leaders said that in the draft resolution to be discussed at the conference, the party has mentioned that apart from aggressive politics of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the state government’s welfare measures and free doles are drawing common people away from the opposition forces.
507 delegates, including some special invitees, are attending the state conference, which was inaugurated by general secretary Sitaram Yechury. The resolution adopted at the meet will be placed at the CPI(M)’s 23rd party congress to be held in April in Kannur, Kerala.
With the CPI(M) focusing on having younger people in leadership roles, many old-timers above the age of 70 are likely to be replaced at the state conference, said a number of office-bearers.
The party admitted its mistakes at the central committee meeting held in August last year after the assembly polls.
“For the CPI(M) and the Left Front, these results have been devastating. For the first time since 1946, no communist has been elected to the assembly. The central committee, in a sharp self-critical introspection, drew lessons and outlined the corrective measures to be undertaken,” the central committee said in a statement.
For the CPI(M), which ruled the state from 1977 to 2011, the only success since that central committee meet is a noticeable increase in vote share in the municipal elections held in February.
Outlining the agenda of the conference on Tuesday afternoon, state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said: “A number of draft resolutions on various issues will be placed by the delegates. These include more participation and empowerment of women, freedom of the media and secular politics. The state government and the Centre are following the same policies that help only crony capitalism. Deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal will also be discussed.”
