Singer Bappi Lahiri, who died at the age of 69 on February 15 this year, was also known for his unique sense of style and his gold jewellery. His son Bappa Lahiri has revealed that in his childhood he would get trolled for his father’s fashion sense, which later became a trend on its own. Bappa also said that his father’s gold chains were not just fashion for him as the musician believed there was God in them. Bappa recalled that Bappi’s gold chains were a little bit inspired by American singer Elvis Presley. As a child, Bappi once saw a picture of Elvis wearing a gold chain, and wanted to create an image of his own. Bappa said his father would not think about how he is looking or what others were thinking about it when he would wear his shiny jackets and his sunglasses or his gold chains.

Bappa told ET Times, “I was ragged in school. People saying ‘oh, your father wears sunglasses in night, he can’t see etc.’ Today it’s become like a trend. He never went by the book when it came to style. He wore whatever he wanted to wear, it was for himself. Mai kitna bhi bolu ‘daddy ye suit nahi kar raha (no matter how much I said daddy it’s not suiting you),’ it was his style. Unko jo pasand tha, woh karte the (He did what he liked). He would wear the sunglasses even in recording studios.”

Bappa revealed that his father’s sunglasses were actually numbered and the singer needed them to see clearly, and he would modify them according to his eye power.

Asked if he told his mother about the comments about his father’s sunglasses at school, Bappa said, “Obviously. But dad was on his own when it came to his style, his glasses. Around 10-15 years back, I was travelling with him for a concert. We were to take a flight at 5:30 am, and he came out of the room with all his chains, sunglasses in full style. And I was like ‘dad subah subah kyu (why dressing up so early in the morning)? It’s okay.’ There didn’t use to be airport looks or paparazzi at the time. But it was his image. He considered his gold chains lucky, he believed there was God in them, every one of them had a memory.”

Bappi, who composed songs for movies such as Disco Dancer, Himmatwala, Sharaabi, Dance Dance, Satyamev Jayate, Commando, Aaj Ke Shahenshah among others, last composed the song Bhankas for the 2020 movie Baaghi 3. He died on the night of February 15, and was cremated in presence of his family, friends, and prominent members from Bollywood on February 17.
