The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won five of the seven assembly segments of Hoshiarpur district on Thursday.

The AAP retained the Garhshankar seat, where MLA Jai Krishan Rori registered his second consecutive win. Former Congress ministers Sunder Sham Arora and Sangat Singh Gilzian suffered defeat in Hoshiarpur and Urmur, respectively.

The Congress retained Chabbewal, whereas the BJP won in Mukerian.

In Sham Churasi reserved constituency, the AAP’s Ravjot Singh defeated Congress’s sitting MLA Pawan Adia by 21,356 votes, the highest in the district. AAP’s Brahm Shankar Jimpa defeated Arora by 13,380 votes in Hoshiarpur. Dasuya sitting MLA Arun Dogra was defeated at the hands of AAP candidate Karanbir Singh Ghuman. The latter polled 8,587 more votes than Dogra.

The lowest victory margin was seen in Mukerian, where BJP’s Jangi Lal Mahajan defeated AAP’s Gurdhian Singh Multani by 2,691 votes. First-timer Jasbir Singh Raja Gill defeated Gilzian in Urmur by 4,190 votes. In Chabbewal, Congress’s sitting MLA Raj Kumar won by 7,646 votes.

Even in the two segments that the AAP lost, it fared far better than other rivals. The SAD contested only two seats on its symbol but lost both. District president Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan lost from Garhshankar, whereas Sarabjot Singh Sabi, who was Bikram Singh Majithia’s pick, lost from Mukerian.

BSP candidates, backed by the SAD, suffered humiliating defeats in their respective constituencies. After leaving the SAD in protest against the denial of ticket, former MLA Mohinder Kaur Josh had fielded his son Karamjit Singh Bablu from Sham Churasi but he secured only 3,459 votes.
