A massive flash flood in Nepal has triggered an urgent search for hundreds of people, including more than 100 Indian nationals reportedly missing after the disaster struck the country’s northern Himalayan region. The flooding caused extensive destruction in Rasuwa district and left rescue agencies facing one of their most difficult operations in the mountainous border region.

According to initial reports, around 384 people were listed as missing, including 105 Indians, 93 Nepali citizens and hundreds of foreign travellers. Nepalese authorities were investigating reports that an earthquake caused an ice-rock avalanche, which then led to a sudden surge of water downstream. Rescue teams have been sent into the affected region, but the operation is complicated by damaged infrastructure. When roads and bridges are destroyed, rescue personnel cannot easily reach isolated settlements. In some places, helicopters may be the only practical way to reach people.

India is preparing relief materials for Nepal, including emergency medicines and food supplies. The Indian Air Force has reportedly been kept on standby to provide additional assistance if required.

Meanwhile, Nepalese authorities have urged people living along rivers to remain alert. Floodwaters can continue moving downstream even after the initial flash flood, creating dangers for communities located far from the original disaster zone.

The tragedy has demonstrated how quickly conditions can change in the Himalayan region. A location that is normally busy with travellers can become inaccessible within minutes when a flash flood or avalanche occurs.

Search operations are expected to continue as authorities gather more information about the missing. The casualty figures could also change as rescue teams reach areas that remain inaccessible.
