India has reported 2,568 fresh coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours – a marginal spike of 65 cases in comparison to Monday’s tally. The overall Covid cases in the country – logged since the start of the pandemic – stand at 4,29,96,062. In the last 24 hours, 97 deaths were logged, taking the total number of deaths due to the viral disease to 5,15,974.
At 33,917, the active Covid-19 cases are 0.08 per cent of the total infections, the latest government data showed on Tuesday. While the daily positivity rate stood at below 1 per cent (0.37), the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 0.46 per cent.
A total of 4,722 patients have recovered since yesterday, taking the total number of recoveries to 4,24,46,171. The current recovery rate stood at 98.72 per cent, says the government.
Covid cases in India have been steadily decreasing after seeing a resurgence in mid-January owing to the highly infectious Omicron variant when the daily tally crossed the 3-lakh mark.
In a boost against its fight against Covid-19, India is all set to expand its vaccination drive to include children aged 12-14 years from Wednesday. So far, the country has been vaccinating its population aged 15 and above. India will also administer booster doses against Covid-19 to people above 60 years of age. Only people with illnesses – above 60 years of age – were receiving booster doses till now.
India has so far given 180.36 crore vaccine doses with more than 17 lakh (17,11,867) doses being administered in the past 24 hours, official data shows.
Meanwhile, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan will also be addressing a virtual conference with states and Union territories at 11 am Tuesday, reported news agency ANI. The talking points are likely to include the vaccination of children aged 12-14 years and precaution dose for all citizens above 60 years of age, the report, citing sources, said.
