Earthquake that rocked Myanmar has been confirmed as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent memory. As search and rescue teams work tirelessly to locate survivors, satellite images from ISRO have shown the widespread damage across the region. Particularly concerning are the devastating effects on Myanmar’s cultural heritage sites, some of which have been irreversibly damaged.
ISRO’s satellite images, taken from the Cartosat and Resourcesat series, have captured detailed pictures of the impact of the earthquake on some of the most iconic cultural landmarks in Myanmar, including the famous Bagan Archaeological Zone. The earthquake led to the collapse of several ancient temples and pagodas, some of which had stood for over a thousand years.
Cultural Heritage Damage:
- Bagan Archaeological Zone: The Bagan region, home to over 2,000 ancient temples and stupas, has sustained extensive damage. Several of these structures have either collapsed entirely or suffered severe structural damage. ISRO’s imagery showed collapsed roofs, broken walls, and cracked foundations, with debris scattered across the heritage site. These sites were considered irreplaceable treasures of Myanmar’s history and culture.
- Other historical sites: Apart from Bagan, other significant cultural sites like the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and Mandalay Hill have also suffered structural damage. ISRO’s satellite imagery has been instrumental in determining which parts of these iconic sites are still intact and which sections are most in need of immediate restoration efforts.
Recovery and Preservation Efforts:
The Myanmar government, in collaboration with UNESCO and other international heritage organizations, has begun plans to restore the affected cultural sites. Satellite imagery from ISRO will continue to play an essential role in monitoring the recovery process and ensuring that conservation efforts are carried out with the utmost precision.
