Delhi’s Largest Civil Defence Drill to Date: A Test of Public and Emergency System Resilience

Delhi will conduct its largest-ever civil defence drill on May 9, 2025, marking a crucial milestone in enhancing the capital’s emergency preparedness. With escalating tensions in the region, the drill will focus on testing air raid sirens, evacuation plans, shelter readiness, and the coordination between emergency services.

The air raid sirens will be sounded at 4:00 PM, signaling the start of the exercise. The drill will involve the active participation of police, fire services, medical teams, and civil defence personnel, who will work in unison to carry out evacuations, medical responses, and ensure public safety. Large numbers of residents will be expected to follow safety protocols, such as heading to designated shelters, avoiding crowded places, and staying indoors.

The drill will also test the city’s ability to manage large-scale evacuations. It will simulate various scenarios, including incidents that require the swift movement of people to secure locations. Public transportation, road traffic, and communication systems will be evaluated for their capacity to handle large numbers of evacuees. Shelters, which are critical to keeping people safe during emergencies, will be tested for their ability to accommodate residents under stress.

Additionally, the medical response will be a key component of the drill. Emergency medical teams will practice triaging patients, administering first aid, and ensuring that all those injured during the simulated attack are cared for efficiently. Doctors and nurses will also practice treating mass casualty situations, such as treating burns and fractures, stabilizing patients, and managing psychological trauma.
